- About DN WIN10
Windows 10:An Opportunity;Not an Obstacle
Microsoft will end extended support for Windows 7 Professional on January14, 2020. Consider Windows 10 as an engine for change: this is an opportunityfor financial institutions (Fls) to invest in a system that maintains compliance, enhances security and provides improved consumer experiences.
Anytime a new operating system (OS) is released, there's a lot of hype about the newsystem's benefits, but they can come at the cost of time and money. lf the system doesn'tdeliver as promised, or these benefits are perceived as of little use, it's not easy to jump onthe bandwagon the next time another release comes out. in fact, 60% of ATMs around theglobe were still running Windows XP a vear after extended maintenance ended,' But, if Flscan view the industry event as one of an opportunity, and not an obstacle, the chance toprovide consumers with a premier experience is just the tip of the benefits.
Current situation
Fls and solution providers will need to upgrade their systems to Windows 10 by January14, 2020, as Microsoft stops supporting older operating systems. While 2020 may soundfar away, Fls should start preparing now, as this isn't a standard downloadable upgrade.Migrating the self-service delivery channel to Windows 10 may require additional upgradesas well as testing-tasks that can take a lot of time out of a technology department'sschedule. Between software, services and hardware updates, some experts predict it couldtake up to two years to fully upgrade to the new system.2
- Why update ?
Windows 10 is the current generation operating system on which the industry is aligning. This OS is the platform to launch into next generation software technology and is alsorequired to maintain regulatory compliance after January 2020.lts many features enable:
PCI compliance portion
New security featuresAn enhanced consumer experience
64-bit architecture
Remote upgrade capability
lt's a "tough pill to swallow” for many Fls to think about expending capital on a migrationstrategy, and there are a variety of reasons to take a chance and continue with the statusquo. However, it can be a big gamble to push off upgrades. Microsoft ceasing support ofolder systems could mean facing these below unwanted challenges and headaches: Upgrading your fleet to Windows 10 can help you futureproof your business throughadvanced functionality, speed and reliability to meet future demands.
As Microsoft halts its support of older Windows systems, Fls will want to upgrade in orderto adhere to PCI compliance and be less vulnerable to logical attacks.
Microsoft and lntel recommend 64-bit architecture, which allows terminal processorsto better utilize memory and run concurrent applications. However, Windows 10 hascomponent subsystems that can run applications developed for 32-bit environments.
